PROF.DR. AYŞEGÜL DEMİRHAN ERDEMİR’S BIOGRAPHY

Prof.Dr. Ayşegül Demirhan Erdemir was born in İstanbul in Turkey in 1945. She is a Turkish professor. She graduated from faculty of pharmacy in 1968. She became assistant to the department of Medical History and Medical Ethics of Istanbul Medical Faculty in 1972. Dr. Demirhan Erdemir became doctor in 1974. The subject of her doctorate thesis was “Mısır Çarşısı Drogları” (Egyptain Bazaar Drugs in English). Afterwards, she became Associate professor (University Lecturer) in 1979. Dr.Demirhan Erdemir was appointed to the deparment of Medical History and Medical Ethics of Medical Faculty, Uludağ University in Bursa in 1980. Bursa is an old city and it is near Istanbul. Afterwards, she became professor in the same department in 1989. She is director of this department.

Prof.Dr.Ayşegül Demirhan Erdemir gave lectures of History of Medicine and Medical Ethics in 1989-1995 in Marmara University, Faculty of Medicine.

Prof.Dr. Ayşegül Demirhan Erdemir has many scientific articles and books. She wrote about 400 articles and 40 books. Four of her books is in English.One of them was published in Pakistan by Hamdard Foundation. The number of her English scientific articles is about 75. Her researches are on medical history, medical folklore and medical ethics. She researched many topics in the libraries of many countries such as Canada, Austria, France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Syria etc. She participated in many international scientific congresses.

Prof.Dr. Ayşegül Demirhan Erdemir is the member of some societies such as International Society for the History of Medicine (ISHM), Wellcome Instirute, International Association of Bioethics, International Association for the Study of Traditional Asian Medicine (ISTAM) and International Society for the History of Islamic Medicine(ISHIM). Moreover, she is the executive committee member of ISTAM and is the Turkish Representative Member of both ISHM and ISHIM. Moreover, she is the member of Ethics Committee of Uludag University. Dr. Erdemir is the editor of 3 journals and 1 bulletin.

Also, she became the member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical History.

Dr. Demirhan Erdemir knows Turkish, English and Germany.

Dr. Erdemir is the member of Turkish societies such as Türk Tıp Tarihi, Türkiye Biyoetik Derneği, Hasta Hakları Derneği in Turkey. Also, she is the second president of Turkish Society of History of Medicine. Moreover, she is the president of Society of Medical Ethics and Medical Law.

She is the member of ethics committee board of Uludağ University Hospital. Moreover, some English biographies about A. Demirhan Erdemir’s were published in USA, Saudia Arabia, Syria and Malasia. Some scientific English medical historical Journals accepted her as a famous medical historian and ethicist. She is the editor of a Journal called Journal of Medical Ethics, Law and History in Turkey. Moreover, she is the editor of an international journal called Journal of International Society for the History of Islamic Medicine (JISHIM). Also, she is the editor of bulten of the Turkish Society of History of Medicine.

Dr. Erdemir held in 6 panels, 1 symposium and 1 international congress on ethics.
